Interview by José Luis Rico.
Born and raised in Punta Arenas, Chile, one of the southernmost cities in the world, the Chilean writer Óscar Barrientos Bradasic has created a unique imaginary world in his books, where Antarctic landscapes, anthropomorphic creatures, stories of Croatian immigrants, robots, emotions, monsters, sailors and the folklore of the Tehuelche indigenous people converge. As a literary researcher, Barrientos Bradasic has studied the representation of both polar circles in Western literature and cinematography, thus his works also feature an arctic dimension. If in the European literary canon writers like García Márquez and Borges represent the South, Barrientos’ stories and research are “more southern than the south”.
